The Mann Cup series concluded (congrats to the Chiefs!) and I felt the need to create my own series. Later, I'll cover the MSL and WLA teams- the two divisions that send the top team from each to compete for Mann Cup. For now I'll give a little background and cover the hardware itself.
Sr A is the top summer box lacrosse league and is divided into MSL (Major Series Lacrosse- teams are located in Ontario) and the WLA (Western Lacrosse Association- teams are located on mainland Vancouver, BC and Vancouver Island). Pro lacrosse players are a significant population of the teams, though up-and-coming athletes and hometown heroes are also huge forces on the rosters.
The top team from each compete against each other for the Mann Cup in a best-of-7 series. The host team alternates each year- in 2015 the Victoria Shamrocks (WLA) and Peterborough Lakers (MSL) captured the top spots, so Victoria hosted the series. This year, the Maple Ridge Burrards won the WLA and Six Nations Chiefs won for MSL, so Six Nations hosted.
The actual (gold plated) Mann Cup is housed in the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The winning team is presented with the replica trophy. Over 100 little nameplates that have the team name and year decorate it and when I held it last year the cup was wobbly- I wonder what crazy things these guys do when they have it, but I'm sure I also don't really want to know.
I had the honor of being in the presence of the Mann Cup last fall, when a friend who played for the Victoria Shamrocks had his turn with it (shoutout & congrats to Steve for winning last year and Jacqui for being an accomplice and capturing the morning with photos- we carried it through Toronto and took it to breakfast).
